unrelated topic but at 28:22 is he really cutting a roach on his table? Dude gotta clean man!
Riot had a bunch of discrimination lawsuits going as well, just like blizzard
Actually im one of those young kids who couldnt afford pay2win back in the days and believed it was really unfair,
but today i work and i can indeed afford to pay 2 win, and i don't just accept it, i totally embrace it, because there is no way i can keep up by playing 2/3 hours at evening of everyday with people who just farm 24/7, pay 2 win defntly makeup for that.
Just to be clear Pay to win is only valid if the items are better than what you can actually get in game when playing. For example, in Clash royal it's more like Pay to Progress, since the only thing it do is make you progress faster toward the ladder game where everything is balance (everybody got lv max card), at the detriment of the non-paying user who get overlved in couples of matches. but in the end, everybody is going to be the same and the non-paying user might be better from finding way to play against overlved card/player
I think the discussion around monetization are very important.
Greg makes a great point about the subscription model that I didn't think about. However my biggest issue about the f2p or optional subscription service is that devs have to make something bad more xp to level up so more grinding is required. Limited inventory, bad loot drops ect. To get players to buy that fix every month. Either through subscription services or 1 time purchases. Imho if your gonna have to make the game feel bad to encourage people to buy the upgrades might as well just make the game good and require the sub. However to buy the base game and subscription like wow does is pretty shitty
The only thing I wanted from the Riot's MMO is a good PvE content, not just farm jungle like new MMOs. I want good raid boss fights and dungeons like WoW
Im sorry for the haters but riot, this last 3 years, didnt miss a shot:launched valorant which became basically the next csgo, made arcane which is so loved universally, and last but not least has league of legends in its best moment balancing wise:just look at world championship where the variety of champions used have never been this great with 115 champions used out of 160. The hype is real for a reason guys
Wheres the data?
Riot is Blizz 15 years ago… Absolutely. Blizz used to see games being made and say "We can do that better!" and they did. Riot does the same, they just do it with Blizzard games.
on the pay to win stuff:
tl;dr: yes, P2W is more 'normal' right now, deffo for newer generations. but the fact remains that P2W is going to limit your audience like crazy. and even if it is a really good game, it's still going to give you a diminishing playerbase. not everyone has the amount of money needed to stay competitive, or is willing to pay anything close to the amount needed to stay competitive. and that unfairness between whales vs regulars is going to push people away. (diablo immortal is a good example, big enough game with enough hype for the playerbase to explode, and then basically halve by the 30day mark, cause of it's P2W shit etc)
explanation:
sure people might be getting more used to it. but P2W usually also limits your playerbase. good example is those phone games, the more P2W they are, the more people stop playing it due to the unfairness in the game. a lot of people still can't( or don't want to) pay for those games, cause usually you have to spend a couple hundred just to be able to keep up with the white whales.
you see this a lot in games like those phone war games, you'll be getting shredded by whales that are much higher level and lose tons of times rebuilding rather than growing your city or whatevs, so you you need to start paying and/or spend ridiculous amounts of time on it, just to keep up a bit. and the game doesn't protect you from these player, there is no protection against being farmed out by a player twice your size, cause they want it to stay fun for the whales, and want to motivate you to throw money at the game till you can send some payback to that whale, continuing the cycle of throwing money at it. so some peeps might pay a bit, fall for a sunk cost fallacy and go deep, but most peeps will get demotivated and stop playing.
these games have the benefit of being able to reach virtually everyone with a phone. the problem for pc games is that they have a more limited audience (not everyone has a pc that's capable of running anything other than runescape and farmville :S). and good examples here are lost ark and diablo immortal. both had a very hype launch with a lot of content coming out about them. then a lot of content swapped to "ffs this shit ain't fair, I can't keep up with this whale cause i'm not a millionaire that can drop hundreds on this game without thinking about it, i need that for groceries and bills". and their playerbase has dropped immensely since then. the only saving grace for games like this is if the game is fun enough for unpaying players to continue playing it.
and whether or not the new generation is more accepting of P2W or not, doesn't matter if they aren't able/willing to spend the money to stay competitive. not to mention that this would kill any competitive endgame over time.
these heavy P2W games are just 'milking models', and with phone games you can milk till the playerbase dries up, then relaunch the game with a different skin and some tiny new additions, there is very little red tape to cut through to post a phone game, so there's tons of publishers that have 4-5 reskins of the same game floating around, all P2W and all just milking money till they die, so they can be reskinned again.
the closest PC/console examples would be CoD and FIFA. but this model is a bit harder to do for pc games, longer dev times etc, those games like CoD and FIFA still take a year or so to release, and people do expect 'some' improvements, cause the games do cost money, unlike those free to download phone games
Riot games is going to own everything soon. They have "replaced" CSGO with Valorant, They have League of Legends, TFT, This MMO, and they also own and partnered with Hytale which will hopefully replace Minecraft.
the lol skins is the biggest example of a game making 100s of millions of dollars every year
Asmons takes are difficult to hear from time to time
Star citizen has unlimited money the games still not done and they still ask for money.
When any talk about monetization in a game cames up i remember GW2, that game monetization feels amazing, you get the whole base game for free to try everything and then if you decide to stay you buy the expansions and the game play as much as you want, everything else in the "cash shop" is optional.
That been said GW2 has gone a bit too far with its fashion and ppl looking like lightbulbs, but overall the game the model of monetization itself is amazing.
riot has had workplace issue tho. nothing nearly as bad as blizz but still there.
pay to win is probably great when youre getting a ludicrous amount of money to play the pay to win games.
We are talking about Riot Games, a company that made League of Legends, Valorant and a free fucking Netflix serie, Arcane, who was won many awards and shit .. man, we already know how big this MMO game will be.
Free 2 Play MMO does work without pay to win, GW2 is the one i know best, it has xp boosts and the like but it really doesn't make much difference. either way it is known as Fashion Wars 2 by the players for a reason…
I do believe that you are wrong that pay to win is seen in a positive light. You have to put mobile separately. Did audience and dif types of games.
Try to put pay to win in the next AAA title on Console/PC and watch it fail.
Lol FFXIV pvp is trash. You can't mention that in the same breath as WoW. Even blade and soul pvp had actual tournaments. FF just barely within the last year or 2 started updating pvp because it was all but dead. Sodapoppin even said himself that the pvp community in FF was dead. I would think Riot would make a really good pvp in their MMO.
why does he look like vladimir putin
You would be surprised how much people are willing to spend, when you don't make them feel like you are after money. Skins are optional. They are not even advertised in the game much with LOL. More so with valorant. But still. Not much. So when are enjoying a game. You have not spent any money on. You feel like spending money to get a skin is justified. Because you have already got the worth of the money. Before spending it. Then you buy the skin. Love using it. Then you are like, oh well I play this character a lot also, and I like this skin. You remember how much you enjoyed using the first skin, so you find value in it. The most I have ever spent on a game is not the £50 for COD games. But in the £100s on league of legends. Gifting skins to your friends for birthdays when you don't know what to get them. Buying your favourite skin on your favourite weapon on valorant. I guess the question is. Subscriptions guarantee money. Is the guaranteed money worth loosing players for. Because less players. Means more players for other games. You might get more money later in life and put it into the other game because that is what you are playing at that time. Riot are so good at getting an audience and keeping it. Making everyone who spent money, feel like it was worth. But not giving them the edge over f2p players whilst doing this.
Riots MMO should be pay to play.
lets be real there will be pets in the mmo. it is a money maker in WoW and they already have several things that can be pets. as for other i think player slots. as they open the world up people wont want to delete older champs and hey 2.99 for a slot will work. i know people hate this but hey more slots means more data and more cost for riot. for the people that say "i will never pay for anything on a FTP game" are idiots. if you like it and want it to stay around then pay for it. you dont work for free so why are you telling them too?
i feel like they will go the guild wars 2 route to a degree
i would think they do:
Free base game
expansions for ingame currency or $$
ingame $$ store with cosmetics and quality of life items (quick bank access, everlasting harvesting tools etc.)
that way:
Entry is free
bonus content can be played for or bought with money for very casual players (like league champs with essence or RP)
cosmetics are the main income
quality of life items will be very attractive for people playing more but wont give you p2w so casuals don't mind
Keen to see how Riot handles Hytale. If done right, that game could be big.
Besides the topic of the MMO…Did he actually just cut a roach in two with a pair of scissors? Who does that?
Finally you have got to mention PoE, yes PoE survived well only by selling cosmetics & stashes, i got no problem with that, it's not pay to win at least not directly.
im just telling you guys, all mmo developers should learn from black desert online
on the pay to win topic most games that are pay to win aren't like super pvp heavy like Star Wars Battlefront had that window where you could buy the hero cards to use them every match and that had a huge backlash from the community. Then a game has a pay to progress faster and then has a pvp that compensates like a set value for power like how Destiny's pvp works.
Actually League's model of buying champions slowly by grinding IP or now Blue Essence, is encouraging players to 1: play mostly the same champions at first 2: play the cheap champions that mostly have a simple kit when starting to play the game. This has a way better chance of winning and actually improving at the game itself, rather than buying all the fancy champs and tunneling on ego outplays rather than actually learning the fundamentals of the game.
WE DONT NEED ANOTHER BR AND OR BASIC FPS FOR LIKE 20 YEARS kek
Micro transactions pray on the 1% of people with shopping addictions . they spend like 20,000 dollar average
p2w makes the game cheap and it kills the game
Im still stuck playing BDO will give the new MMO a try once it comes out.
It is most likely becomming sub based, in another video (cant recall which) it was stated they dont want loot boxes/cosmetic skins, etc in their mmo game, so that would make it more likely to become sub based.
this will absolutly be the wow killer
Whoa whoa whoa…the western audience becoming more accepting of P2W monetization? Nah bro, you're not convincing me of that. P2W games are a cancer on the gaming world, and any game with these scummy models will have countless reviews describing it as 'P2W trash'.
To point out the 'pay-to-win' bit of the entire vid, the one way I tolerate "pay-to-win" is if you've previously done 'the thing' before. FFXIV example. You already have a level 80 somewhere? I don't care if you pay for a level skip for something. But I'm of the mind that you should at least have the experience before that. That's not how it's implemented, but…can't do anything about that.
Riot knows how to make money without going pay to win… They know their players, so they will have a shitton of cosmetics
There is so much options really for non f2p but also not cosmetic miscrotransactions they can utilize, think about it: Pets, Housing decor and feature, battle-pass-like system, membership to some-kind of clubs or guilds, special items, event content for mentioned features, titles, out-of-gameplay visuals (portraits, borders, idc), also maybe mounts, loot-drop rate incrase etc – I think they will find a way, and make this game awesome, at least I have high hopes, cuz this will be the savior of – OR – the end of MMORPGs.
they should make whale servers and free servers whale servers where u can p2w and free servers where you can only earn the items in game.
Casually killing a roach at 28:17 LOL
No. I would pay money to keep P2W out of a game I loved. It's like paying to skip to the ending of a movie.
A good game is about the journey, not the last 5 minutes of play. And you can't balance a story around skipping important chapters of a character's development.
People love their instant gratification, and power creep but it ruins longevity. I hope the designers are more intelligent than us, their customers.
Time to stop playing mmos. People are becoming extremely weak and soft. The grind is satisfaction from the game. Getting to p2w and being geared straight away ruins your drive to continue playing so they move onto other games.
Lost ark is a terrible game, you have played it you should know this.
Phone games are so big because more people in the world own a phone than an actual gaming console. Africa is nearly 40% of worlds population majority of them have a phone but only a tiny % of them have gaming consoles.
On the topic of PtW and such, Riot has an incredible track record when it come to the monetisation of their games. Legends of Runterra is probably the best example.
Riot's Chinese masters will microtransaction you too death, don't you worry lol
If they make an actual mmo, yay, I'm a fan. But instead they're going to make a lootbox mechanic stealth p2w.
And ppl will flock to it because they'll put cat ears on a skin or something.
if riot mmo has shitty graphic design same as damn fornite i wont play it. i would rather play wow azeroth and im a league player/fan… i used to play wow just for tiny bit before with my friend… but i hate the feeling that riot mmo will look like a childish design compared to wow artwork and design
By now everything RIOT has released since League of Legends was successful in a way (dunno how their card game is running tbh). And many League Fans, even me who stopped activly playing LoL a couple of years ago, is eager to play a MMO with that setting and that Lore and World background.
I mean if they transport mechanics of the actual games to the MMO … this would be so overwhelmingly awesome. We know and love hundret and more characters of this world … this a so much bigger and better position for us tto play the MMO, as when WoW was released we maybe knew a couple of Characters in the world and where not so attached to it at all.
